Chapter 37

As Storm, Melody, and Delight frantically darted away, the flaming lava talon slammed onto the ledge, splattering fiery molten rock across the rock shelf and against the nearby wall. The little emeralds swerved and jigged to avoid the lava globs as they rained down. “Sky, you two!” Storm yelled. “Get out of here! Against that thing, we don’t stand a chance!”

Delight instantly took wing, skying just below the cave’s low, curved ceiling, but Melody kept her wings tucked and ran alongside Storm. “You heard me,” Storm growled, “sky! Get up in the air.”

Melody didn’t answer; instead, she looked straight ahead and pushed herself that much harder. Their claws were a drumming beat on the bare rock as they galloped with every bit of speed they could muster. Just for an instant, Storm peered over his shoulder. His eyes popped wide at what he saw.

More serpent-like than a dragon, the thing dragged itself onto the ledge. Its mouth opened and lava dripped from fiery fangs onto the rock floor. Its glowing eyes seemed to pulse in its head as they centered on the three emeralds. Its scales were a radiant yellow, and each appeared rimmed in a scalding scarlet color. Its tail cracked in the air sending a ball of lava flying to splatter against a far wall.

A moment later, it slithered along the ledge in pursuit, leaving a trail of oozing lava.

Storm had to look back only once before yelling, “Faster!” and putting on a burst of speed.

However, Melody hesitated for an instant, as her eye caught something to one side. “In there!” she yelped and planted her talons, her claws scraping and scrabbling for a claw hold as she whipped her body around in a hard right.

Storm half-slid around, his tail whipping along the ground behind him before his talons caught hold, and he and Delight shot into the side-tunnel just behind Melody.

After a few steps, Storm slowed to look back. The fiery monster stuck its head into the tunnel, and just for an instant, Storm’s lips drew back in a tiny smile as it appeared that the thing was too big to follow them into the narrow tunnel.
